Spring bulbs should be planted between September and November of the previous year. When they are planted at this time the sun stimulates the growth for the spring season by warming the soil before the cold weather hits.
Spring blooms started popping up early this year when record breaking high temperatures swept through Michigan this March. With two weeks of lovely summer-like weather spring blooms showed up early and are continuing to add color to Michigan gardens.
Crocus
These early bloomers signal a sign of winters end, blooming in late winter to early spring. Crocuses rise up from the soil with goblet shaped flowers and grass like foliage. While Crocuses are offered in a wide variety of colors lilac, yellow, pink and white are the prominent choices.
Daffodil
The daffodil is a flower that symbolizes friendship. These sunny flowers bring a breath of fresh air to spring landscapes with their trumpet shaped structures and star shaped backgrounds it’s hard not to enjoy these stunning flowers. With proper care Daffodil’s will continue to renew themselves year after year through their foliage.
Hyacinth
Hyacinths bloom from March to April, giving spring gardens gorgeous clusters of highly fragrant flowers. When these fragrant clusters open beautiful star shaped flowers emerge. Hyacinths come in a variety of colors as well including blue, pink, white, red and yellow.
Tulips
Tulips which are perhaps the most popular bulbous plant are imported from Holland. These gorgeous flowers are not only offered in a variety of colors and styles but also a wide range of blooming times. If planned ahead a full garden of tulips can be on display from March to May.
Snowdrops
Snowdrops, are among the earliest blooming bulbs. Snowdrops bloom between February and March, sometimes not even waiting for the snow to melt. These tiny little white flowers only measure up to an inch and reach an overall plant height of 4-8 inches. Despite their small size they are an early reminder that spring is right around the corner.
